Intro To Ceramics, SUNY New Paltz, Summer '09

This was a unique teaching experience: seventeen of my nineteen students were exchange students from Turkey that had never touched clay before. Another one of my students, Russian, had experience in clay prior to taking the class, and produced some beautiful cut bowls. My one American student had also never experienced clay as a maker, but was already a collector of handmade ceramic mugs.
The course was an intense 5 week summer course: Monday through Thursday, four hours each day. The first of project included wheel thrown cylinders, drinking vessels with handles, and trimmed bowls. The second project included creating a tile press mold from a digitally manipulated image. Here are two slide shows: the first is of the final critique, the second is of some of the tiles produced.
